Hello, my name is Lara Lang, and I am excited to be the new Assistant Principal – Innovations in Science and STEM at REC. For the last 12 years I’ve worked in the Catholic education system in Adelaide and Japan. My interests and passions in science extend to being a regular presenter at STEM conferences, and being active in the non-profit ‘The STEMable Project’, which seeks to increase female participation and success in STEM pathways.
I live in an eco-house made from straw bales, where my two children keep me busy as we explore the world around us.
Quick quiz: What’s the most common element in the Universe?
The first few weeks at REC have been exciting; full of inspiring conversations (with students and staff!) and overwhelmingly positive. I’m looking forward to science hosting an inaugural show as part of Fringe@REC later this term.
If anyone in the Reynella East College community has a background or experience in science, please contact me as I’d love to explore connections – whether it be as a guest speaker, “skype an expert”, judging products, providing real-life challenges to be solved, co-working on a project or mentoring students.
P.S. The answer is Hydrogen.
Our Year 8 students took a step back to Medieval Times today. As an opportunity to bring history to life and to further support transition; the year 8’s were involved in an authentic Byzantine medieval re-enactment of life in the 11th century, and middle ages themed team-building games and activities. A feast of yiros was also enjoyed by many. This inaugural event was an enormous success, with the students and staff well into the spirit of the occasion. Many thanks to the New Varangian Guard for creating an awesome Medieval Village on our oval, and spending the day immersing our students in 11th century history.
Special congratulations to two Year 12 (2017) students who had the esteemed honour of receiving a SACE ‘Merit’ award/s yesterday.
Angelo Abdelmalek received a Merit award for both Chemistry (taught by Mr Linke) and Biology (taught by Mr Khan).
Mitchell Griggs received a Merit award for Physics (taught by Mr Chuah)
The boys, their families and Ms Green attended the Merit Ceremony held at Government House yesterday, to recognise and celebrate their outstanding achievement of earning a place among the top 2% in the State.
We look forward to meeting many families at our ‘Inspiring Success’ evening on Tuesday 6 February, 3.15-7.00pm.

Peter Pan – what a spectacular! Our community and families were super impressed by the polish and professionalism displayed by the 350+ cast and crew, over 2 sold-out performances at Hopgood Theatre. It was such a joy to watch students from Reception to Year 12 having a truly wonderful time on stage, with so much talent amongst them.
